Argentina, Canada & USA Register Wins on Day 1 of ICC Americas Women?s T20 Championship
Playing in the opening game at the Jimmy Powel Oval (JPO) in Grand Cayman, Canada had a resounding victory over Brazil by 126 runs. Canada won the toss and elected to bat first in brilliant sunshine. The innings were given momentum by Maree Wilson (21) who took full advantage of the power play overs that conceded 38 runs for the loss of 1 wicket.
Brazil celebrated claiming their first wicket by the run out route in true samba style, but that was short lived as Durriya Shabbir (63) from 45 balls, with four 4 and one 6 took advantage of some wayward bowling and sloppy Brazilian fielding. Good support in the closing overs came from Joanna White (31) not out and Mikaela Turik (14) not out, as the Canadians finished their innings on 181/3 in 20 overs.
The Brazilian players appeared nervous at the crease and wickets fell constantly to indecisive batting, only Narayana Reinehr with 20 runs got into double figures as they completed their overs with a merger 55 as the target was never challenged.
In their first ever time competing in the ICC Americas Women?s Championship, hosts Cayman Islands took on the regional defending champions USA, at the Smith Road Oval, in front of a jubilant and vocal home crowd that was silenced by a resounding USA win.
USA won the toss and elected to bat first, which lead to 14 runs from the opening over as the USA signaled their intention to defend their regional title.
The USA batting was centered on Nadia Gruny (36) at the top of the order and the experienced Candacy Atkins, with a polished (29). Good support also came from Melisa Sandy (27) and that carried the Americans to a satisfactory 125/4 in the allotted 20 overs.
In reply, the Cayman Islands innings never got going as the wickets fell at regular intervals. Only captain Mollyann Moore mustered any resistance with 18 as the Cayman Islands innings soon folded for 57 runs to give the USA victory by 68 runs.
In the other afternoon match; Argentina defeated Bermuda by 8 wickets at the (JPO). Argentina won the toss and elected to field and Bermuda soon found themselves at 59 all out from 17.5 overs. Brittney Marshall (12) was their top scorer and the only Bermudan to reach double figures. Argentina?s bowling attack was lead by Sharon Seaton, Alison Stocks and Mercedes Esperon.
