BCB Scholarship Programme

The BCB is pleased to announce that Jekon Edness and Stephen Outerbridge have both graduated from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC). Jekon and Stephen are the first of the Bermuda Cricket Board Scholarship candidates to graduate with a university degree. Jekon has finished with a Bachelor's degree in Sports & Physical Education and Stephen has a Bachelor's degree in Sports and Exercise Science (Honours) after four years of funding by the BCB.

In 2003 the BCB launched their scholarship programme to assist talented young cricketers attend one of the UK's six University Centres of Cricketing Excellence (UCCE). Students attending receive Level 3 coaching year round, access to indoor nets, numerous first class fixtures and healthy competition as well as quality teaching leading to their undergraduate degree. All six UCCE's have solid reputations for developing young cricket talent and preparing players for a life in professional sports.

President of the BCB, Mr. Reginald Pearman stated, "Promoting and developing the youth has been the major cornerstone of the BCB Development Programme and I am extremely pleased to confirm that both these young men have done exceptionally well, both academically and in cricket. Both Stephen and Jekon are important members of the National Team and are great role models for all our young players aspiring to play for Bermuda."

Stephen Outerbridge stated, "I am extremely pleased to graduate especially with all the traveling I did representing Bermuda whilst at the same time juggling full-time academics. Attending UWIC was a great experience for me, which allowed me to work and train with some leading first class players and ex-Test cricketers. My game has improved during my time in England, both domestically and at the international level. I am going to take some time to plan my next step, however, I am hoping to develop my career further in Physical Education and know my experiences in the UK will help me to achieve in whatever path I choose. I would like to thank the Bermuda Cricket Board for providing me with the funding to provide this opportunity and Dunkley's Diary for my summer job as well as my family and friends for their support during the last four years."

Jekon Edness stated, "I am ecstatic to graduate from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.  To balance doing my dissertation and traveling around the world with the national team enabled me to attain a new level of discipline and makes the achievement even more special.  Attending UWIC opened me up to a higher level of sport and education and it has been beneficial to my overall development as a student and athlete.  This degree from UWIC takes me one step closer to attaining my career goal of being a successful Physical Education teacher within the Bermuda Public School System.  On the sporting side, playing with the UCCE helped my game tremendously.  Playing against various county sides at first-class facilities were experiences that I will never forget and I would like to thank the Bermuda Cricket Board for giving me the opportunity to develop as a cricketer, student, and most importantly, a person."
