Congratulations Cricket Canada

Mr. Reginald Pearman, BCB President stated,

"On behalf of the BCB and the cricket community in Bermuda, we would like to congratulate the Canadian U19 team for their historic victory against Zimbabwe in the opening round of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. This is a great achievement for Canada and for cricket in the Americas Region and we wish them every success in the remainder of the tournament."

Press Statement from Cricket Canada:

The win is Canada's first ever at a World Cup at any level, and captain Rustam Bhatti now believes the only way for Canadian cricket is up.

"This victory means a lot," he said after the win. "This is the start of hopefully a great future for Canadian cricket."

Canada won the toss and opted to bat posting 201 for 7 off their 50 overs - a total that proved to be too demanding for the Zimbabwe batsmen who were bowled out for 191 in the 50th over.

Canada got off to a strong start after wining the toss and deciding to bat, led by openers Ruvindu Gunasekera and Hiral Patel who put on 50 for the first wicket inside 10 overs.

At one stage Canada looked on the verge of a collapse, losing quick wickets to slide to 78 for four until Usman Limbada and Darius D'Souza combined for a fifth wicket partnership of 57.
Usman then went on to play a Man of the Match-winning performance, hitting a well-composed 90. The talented right-hand batsman showed a great deal of composure in his innings, his 50 coming off 90 balls, while his remaining 40 came off just 24.

Zimbabwean wicket keeper Dean Mashawidza was the star in the field taking four catches including a magnificent full-length dive to dismiss Canadian captain Bhatti for two.

Mashawidza was also Zimbabwe?s star with the bat compiling 75 from 118 balls, and while he was still at the crease Zimbabwe was still in with a chance. He and Andrew Lindsay rescued the side after a shaky start saw them at 19 for three, but the pair added 110 for the fourth wicket.

After the pair were dismissed, Mashawidza falling in the 39th over, any chance of a Zimbabwe win was effectively extinguished.

Score Summary:
Canada: 201-7 in 50 overs (Usman Limbada 90; Nathan Waller 2-29)
Zimbabwe: 191 in 49.4 overs (Dean Mashawidza 75, Andrew Lindsay 40; Zain Mahmood 3-31, Riyazkhan Pathan 2-44)
Canada won by 10 runs
