November, 2008 Brisbane Academy Update
The players have been training intensively every day including: strength training on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; regular fitness workouts (consisting of 6K runs up Mount Gravitt and strength and interval training at the top and then a 2 mile hike back to the campus through a dirt trail) and then matches on Saturdays and most Sundays. The players attended the Day/Night One Day Match between Queensland and Tasmania at the Gabba and have had the opportunity to play in a match with the Queensland Blind Cricket Association. The players thoroughly enjoyed themselves on both occasions and the left that match with a greater understanding and appreciation of the blind. In the first two weeks, Rodney, Tamauri, Chris, Oronde and Kyle completed the Australian Level 1 Coaching Course to become certified coaches. This will give them an opportunity to better understand the technical aspects of the game (batting, bowling, fielding, wicket keeping). To complete the practical side, they are assisting the South District Cricket Club's Youth Programme. Whilst in Australia, Cricket Development Director, Arnold Manders had the chance to visit the new Queensland Cricket Academy, which is Australia's Cricket School of Excellence which includes the impressive Allan Border Field, a training field, which consists of 14 nets (7 with bowling machines, 7 astro turf wickets with varying bounce and speed, 7 turf wickets), a training field (with three training wickets) for simulated bowling, batting and fielding drills and a weight room which included ice pools for ice baths for recovery and injury prevention. Cricket Development Director Arnold Manders stated, "This has been an excellent opportunity for me to see first class training facilities and to watch our players' development so far. Most interestingly, I had the opportunity to see how Australian Domestic Cricket operates and it is my aim to introduce some aspects to Bermuda cricket in 2009. I can confirm that all six players have excellent reports. They have been training intensively both in the gym, running every morning and on the field. The players have had the opportunity to experience different facilities and coaching methods. I am looking forward to evaluating their progress when they return to Bermuda in November."
