Sixth Annual BELCO Cup Awards Presented

HAMILTON, Bermuda (Wednesday, June 11, 2008) - Today, Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) and the Bermuda Cricket Board presented cheques related to the Sixth Annual BELCO Cup, June 7-8.

BELCO President & CEO A.L. Vincent Ingham congratulated all four teams, while presenting cheques to the following:

  • Winners - Southampton Rangers -- $1,500 (winners in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008; Western Stars won in 2004)
  • Finalists - St. George's Cricket Club -- $1,000
  • Semi-finalists - St. David's Cricket Club and Young Men's Social Club -- $500 each
  • Man of the Match - Janeiro Tucker -- $300

This year, BELCO, BCB and St. David's County Cricket Club, who traditionally host the Final, jointly agreed that a new charity founded by Ms Grejai Smith should benefit from proceeds of the Final.  "No Child Goes Without", which provides free lunches to schoolchildren and this summer will help to send young children to camp, is the recipient of the $5.00 admission fees to the final, as well as the sale of $10 children's BELCO Cup T-shirts by the Bermuda Masters Cricket Team. In addition, the Umpires for the Final contributed their fees to the charity.  As a result, the BCB presented at cheque for $2,307 for gate sales, the Bermuda Masters presented cheques for $962 raised from selling BELCO's children's t-shirts and an additional $802 raised by the players themselves. President of The Bermuda Umpire's Association, Mr. Walisford Manders, donated their $600 Umpire's fee to "No Child Goes Without". A record total of $4,671 was raised.

As Cup sponsor, BELCO also presented a cheque for $3,000 to the Bermuda Cricket Board.
