Belco Cup Competition

"Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) was pleased to accept the opportunity to become title sponsor in 2003, when the Bermuda Cricket Board announced that the previous sponsor had withdrawn.  For BELCO, this is an opportunity to support a popular tournament that helps to kick off the traditional cricket season each year.  It is also an opportunity for BELCO to invite community leaders and key business partners to its hospitality tent on the water’s edge at beautiful St. David’s Cricket Club.  BELCO employees are proud to volunteer their services to help out during the tournament and each year, BELCO encourages families to enjoy the BELCO Cup together, as it is a great weekend of cricket."

2006 will mark the fourth year of the Belco Cup.  The competition which started in 2003 sees the top four teams in the premier division from the previous season competes in a Semi-final played on Saturday and the Final on Sunday.  Southampton Rangers two times winners will be hoping to retained the cup and make it three out of four.

 2006 participating teams will be

  1. Southampton Rangers
  2. St. Davids
  3. Western Stars
  4. Bailey's Bay

Nature of the sponsorship:

  •  $3,000 contribution annually to BCB plus
  • $1,000 to winning team,
  • $750 to second place,
  • $500 to each of the other two teams,
  • $250 to the man of the match.
  • Man of the Match gets a cup of his own to keep
  • Winning team gets a cup to keep.
  • The real BELCO Cup is kept at BELCO; it is engraved with names of winning teams.
  • Pass winners of the competition

    • 2003 Southampton Rangers
    • 2004 Western Stars
    • 2005 Southampton Rangers

Is there any change planned for 2006

The four teams will compete in  colour team shirts for the first time, and there are plans to highlight BELCO’s 100th anniversary.

BELCO has tried to emphasize the value of this as a family event.  The first year, it was held on Father’s Day.  every year there are activities involving young people to encourage youth participation in cricket. Also, in 2005 T-shirts we sold and the proceed donated Delbie Borden Memorial Scholarship Fund to help Delyone with college.  BELCO also made a contribution of its own to the fund.
